This is an op-ed inspired by the recent events that have taken place expanding abortion laws. This is long, and parts are graphic. However, before you call yourself pro choice, I plead with you to read this in its entirety, so to really understand the foundation of Planned Parenthood, how abortions work, and even more so, the Biblical response to such an issue. In addition, this is the second of three that will come out on this topic, targeting different aspects of the industry.
**WARNING: for younger kids, the intricacy of abortion is discussed below and is graphic.
“I just felt my baby kick!”
Moving on from last week’s installment where I discussed Margaret Sanger’s dark beginnings, for this week’s post, I’d like to look at some of the facts surrounding a child’s development in the womb and how abortion affects it. Concerning pregnancy, the majority of women don’t find out they are pregnant until at least 6 weeks. At 6 weeks pregnant, the fetus already has a heart dividing into four chambers and pumping blood. At 17 weeks, the baby can make a fist and place its hand in its little mouth, is rolling around, and the heart beats strong (below is the child at only 17 weeks). Shockingly, what you see below is legal to kill in all states, as 17 weeks is and was legal even before the New York Bill. Considering what you see below, imagine terminating a child at 40 weeks (third trimester- thanks to New York), right before it is ready to leave the womb.
Confusingly, not only does this bill contradict science in that a child right before birth is very much a child, but it contradicts the already existing Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 (also described in the previous article). This act “recognizes an embryo or fetus in utero as a legal victim, if they are injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence.” The law defines “child in utero” as “a member of the species Homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb.” How is it that by law a fetus at any stage inside the womb is a legal victim if injured or killed, and the attacker can be charged with murder, yet, on the other hand, it is legal to kill the exact same living, moving, functioning fetus without repercussion just before it leaves the womb? Thus, the creation of “my body, my choice.” However, it is not your body you’re terminating. Inconvenience does not change the validity of the scientific and legal evidence of a life. Why does a mother feel kicking? Why does an ultrasound show a child moving and reveal its gender? Why is miscarriage so heartbreaking if it is only a blob of cells? This is because the fetus inside a mothers womb is a life, and the validity of a life does not change based on convenience.
With our most modern and relevant policies well beyond 17 weeks, the stakes are out of control. The recently failed Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would have required that “any health care practitioner present” at the time of a birth “exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.” In simpler terms, this now means that a born child, one out of the womb, fully on its own, can be left to die if it was supposed to be aborted and something during the process failed. It is repulsive that politics have become so abrasive and consuming that we can’t put aside political beliefs and see this as a moral issue. Political parties aside, beliefs on stages of a fetus aside, to say that a child born and in the hands of a doctor can be left for dead should be too far for anyone. This is an attack on life. It is infanticide. Why does America have stronger laws protecting species of birds and wildlife, but not its own children? If a child can be killed out of the womb and in the doctor’s office, how much farther does it have to go before our nation can realize the bloodstained genocide it is left on its hands?
For one type of late-term abortion, as it has been explained by a former abortionist, “the baby is injected with a poison directly into his skull or torso. He then suffers a hideously painful death, which he will certainly feel because of his developed nervous system. If the baby isn’t dead in 24 hours, it has been suffering in agony and will be injected again.” As for a dilation and evacuation abortion, “Once the woman’s cervix has been dilated…forceps are inserted through the enlarged cervix into the uterus. The body parts are grasped at random with a large, long-toothed grasping clamp. With the grasping clamp, the abortionist twists the limbs and body parts from the unborn baby, pulls them from the baby, and pulls the body parts out of the vaginal canal. The remaining body parts, with the exception of the head, are grasped and pulled out. The head is then crushed in order to remove it. The placenta and remaining contents are then suctioned from the uterus. The body parts must be reassembled outside of the mother’s body to be sure all was removed from the womb.” Moreover, Abby Johnson, a former clinic director for Planned Parenthood and employee of the year, resigned and has dedicated her life to exposing the corruption and lies of the industry after walking into a procedural room and witnessing the baby squirm from the suction and then be torn apart. As terrible as this is read, it’s pivotal to understand how an abortion works–how a babies’ limbs are ripped apart and forced out while feeling excruciating pain–before one can really call themselves “pro choice.” This is the painful truth of abortion: the truth everyone hides from with ignorance. This system of murder and immorality should never get some sort of twisted, justified pass.
As children with beating hearts and developing organs and features prepare to leave the womb, doctors are ready to send lethal injections into the child to stop its heart and then pry it out to later sell its parts. As children “mistakenly” born enter the world, doctors can refuse to save their lives like any other human and watch the child die a slow and painful death. As children kicking around in their mom’s wombs are growing and developing, abortion is prepared to terminate their beating hearts. It’s time to stop sending millions of dollars to an agency formed on the basis of racism and discrimination, and redirect the influx of money to fund adoption and care centers for mothers. It’s time we as a nation put aside our pride, political parties, and desire for convenience, and recognize human life at any stage worthy of protection and care. Please check back for the last installment of my op-ed series which focuses on the very present and important Biblical aspect as well as the options besides abortion.
