What is the Lions Council?
Two fundamental people in LCA sports came together last spring with a vision of promoting all-around electric school spirit surrounding LCA athletics. Out of this, the Lions Council was born. Former athletic director, Mr. Patrie, and newly elected athletic prefect, Ben Mollenhauer, decided to form the Lions Council in hopes of achieving their overall goal.
Mr. Patrie defined the Lions Council as “a group of student-athletes who are influential leaders in the LCA community to carry out various Athletic Department initiatives and support the Athletic Prefect and Athletic Director. This includes pep rally planning, LCA spirit wear creation and selection, as well as helping to instill the values and athletic culture we want at LCA.” The Lions Council play a big part in many of the athletic events taking place at LCA. So far this year, the Lions Council has designed new Blue Crews for homecoming, redesigned the pep rally, and planned out some athletic events from the year.

The Lions Council is made up of a group of upperclassmen student-athletes. When asked how he chose these members, Mr. Patrie said, “the student-athletes selected to the charter council was based on their participation in multiple sports at LCA and being juniors and seniors. I also spoke to coaches about who would be a great member of the Lions Council. Multi-sport student-athletes are invested in Lions Athletics and have shown a commitment throughout the school year.”
The first meeting was held on June 5th to introduce the council and begin talking about its goals. Many important topics such as school spirit, athletic events, sports participation, sportsmanship, and performing as a Christian athlete were discussed during this meeting. The group also met a few times over the summer to discuss the 2018-19 school year.
I also asked Mr. Patrie what his and Ben’s ultimate goal was in creating the Lions Council, he said “I’d say the ultimate goal is for the Lions Council to serve the LCA community and athletic program by being leaders on the field, court, course, mat and inside the halls and classrooms. They will also support the efforts of the Athletic Prefect throughout the school year. The Lions Council, similar to the PIG and HOW Boards, will help to facilitate great ideas and programs related to the Athletic Department. Athletics impacts our community on so many levels – health and wellness, school spirit and creating a sense of belonging, and an avenue to glorify God through our talents. Lions Council members will help to make those things happen.” Finally, I asked the long-awaited question: will Mr. Stevens take over the Lion’s council or will he continue to run it? Mr. Patrie answered, “Mr. Stevens will lead the Lions Council as he re-joins the LCA community. As a coach, alum, and someone who is deeply passionate about sports and the positive role they play in student’s lives, I will still be involved with the Lions Council.”
The Lions Council has made a great effort to promote school spirit so far this year. With Homecoming this Saturday they have been very busy with planning and all of the details that go into hyping up the school for a fun weekend. Having a group of students ready and willing to promote school spirit within LCA athletics was a bold and great idea; the Lions Council will undoubtedly be a key part of LCA athletics this year.
